Late Manohar Sadashiv Karandikar commenced business of cinema exhibition from Ritz, Radio theatres at Belgaum. Later he established chain of theatres at various places in Maharashtra namely Baramati, Ahmednagar, Satara, Karad, Barshi, Wai, Solapur & Pune. Late Manohar Karandikar inducted his brothers Vishwanath, Dattatraya & Shrikrishna as business partners & it became a family business of Karandikars. They built a new theatre at Baramati in the memory of their beloved mother ‘Durga’. Late Mamasaheb Mohol, owner of Prabhat theatre Vasai inaugurated ‘Durga Chitramandir’ on 12th June 1969. First cinema to be screened at Durga was the marathi movie ‘Ek gaon bara bhangadi’. Initially two rows were reserved for women.

Cinema exhibition is a show business. Karandikars made sure that their projection rooms were well equipped with modern technology and systems of prevalent times. Earlier there was no drama theatre in Baramati. Events like dramas and orchestra were organised at Durga and Shyam to entertain audience. Durga was among the first theatres of taluka to install Dolby sound system. Durga also had first day first show cinema goers from nearby vicinities.

On 25th December 2009 ‘Durga Chitramandir’ a single screen theatre was converted into ‘Durga City Pride’ a multiplex with 3 screens. It was inaugurated by Mrs. Sunetra Pawar. First cinema to be screened at multiplex was ‘3 idiots’. Durga Chitramandir would go down in the annals of history as amongst the first multiplex at the taluka level. 2018-19 was the golden jubilee year of Durga Chitramandir and also 25th commemoration day of Late Manohar Sadashiv Karandikar. With the help of Bhagini Mandal Baramati, Durga City Pride screened prize winning hindi & marathi movies and also the movies based on various genres, in the name of Durga movie club. Movies were screened exclusively for women, once in every month throughout the year. The event itself was unique in nature which culminated with film festival.

Durga played as a gateway place of entertainment & leisure away from hectic and stressful situations. Emblem of dream girl has not vanished forever in history but will soon make an appearance to enchant ‘Baramatikars’ again.
